Popsoi: “Moldova will open an embassy in Kazakhstan this year.” What other plans do the authorities have for international cooperation?

Moldova will open an embassy in Kazakhstan this year, according to Mihai Popsoi, the Minister of Foreign Affairs. He made these remarks during an interview with a public radio station.

The foreign affairs minister highlighted the embassy’s opening as a significant milestone for Moldovan diplomacy.

“Until now, Moldova has not had a diplomatic presence in this region, despite historical ties and substantial economic opportunities. Kazakhstan has a strong economy, and this embassy will facilitate trade and cooperation with other countries in the region, such as Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan. Both sides plan to inaugurate the embassy next spring or later this year, depending on their availability,” Popsoi stated.

He also announced plans to open two consulates in the United States, Chicago and Sacramento, in 2025. These consulates aim to improve consular services for Moldovan citizens in those regions.

“We also plan to expand our diplomatic presence in areas of major economic interest, such as Egypt, South Korea, and Norway—a close partner that provides substantial support to Moldova. At the same time, we are actively promoting Moldova as an investment destination and working to boost exports to countries where we have diplomatic representation,” the minister added.

Popsoi noted another recent diplomatic success: Israel’s decision to open an embassy in Chisinau. He described this as a significant achievement, resulting from discussions with Israel’s new foreign affairs minister.

“Ireland announced plans to open an embassy in Chisinau just months after I visited Dublin. Additionally, Norway and Greece have recently opened embassy offices in Chisinau, reflecting growing engagement from our European partners. These accomplishments are the result of our sustained diplomatic efforts and Moldova’s rising international appeal, which stems from the trust and respect we enjoy globally, thanks in part to the leadership of President Maia Sandu,” Popsoi concluded.
