Presidency response to Vlah’s request to include question about state’s neutrality in EU referendum

Representatives of the Presidency of the Republic of Moldova have an answer for former Bashkan of Gagauzia Irina Vlah, who in a letter asked the Parliament and President Maia Sandu to initiate a referendum on the inviolability of the neutrality status of the Republic of Moldova and the non-admission of our country to military blocs. “We remind all the established voices of the Kremlin, who have fantasies about referendums for neutrality, that the Constitution, Article 11, enshrines the neutral statehood of the Republic of Moldova: (1) The Republic of Moldova proclaims its permanent neutrality,” the president’s chief of staff, Adrian Balutel, replied last Friday, February 23, in a post on social networks.

“Thus, the supreme law of our country states that we are neutral, that we are not and cannot enter military blocs. All state institutions abide by the supreme law. The question of joining military blocs cannot be discussed because it contradicts the Constitution. This is what I said in my response to the letter sent by Mrs.Vlah to the Presidential Administration. We respect the Constitution and its provisions. We want to keep the peace, not be involved in conflicts, to live in security and mutual understanding, and to have a modern army that protects the neutrality of Moldova. We want to be part of the European family because the European Union is the most sustainable peace project. It is the model on which we are building our country,” said Adrian Balutel.

It should be recalled that on December 24, 2023, President Maia Sandu, when announcing her candidacy for a new term as President, called for a national referendum on accession to the European Union in autumn 2024, held on the same day as the presidential election. Later, the PAS parliamentary majority voted for amendments to the Electoral Code, allowing for a republican referendum on the day of the parliamentary, presidential, and local elections. Consultations are now taking place at the Presidency on this referendum with people from several fields.
