Moldova’s relentless efforts to join the European Union have garnered support from the leader in Paris, as French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his admiration for President Maia Sandu’s proactive stance in combating corruption, implementing reforms, and addressing recent destabilizing factors, including the ongoing crises and conflicts at the border.
During an interview with Realitatea journalist Ileana Pîrgaru, President Macron acknowledged the challenges faced by Moldova due to various circumstances, including the war in Ukraine and the energy crisis. “I am proud that during the French presidency of the EU, Moldova, and Ukraine have become candidate countries. When we extended this gesture to Ukraine, we knew we could not leave Moldova behind. Witnessing Maia Sandu’s steadfast dedication to promoting reforms, I have great confidence in your country’s ability to progress swiftly towards accession and gain recognition,” stated President Macron.
It is worth noting that President Macron is the driving force behind the establishment of the European Political Community. In 2022, he proposed the idea and extended an invitation to Moldova to become a part of it, along with Ukraine and Georgia, after the three countries submitted their applications for EU membership. With Macron’s support and the momentum of ongoing reforms, Moldova’s path to EU integration continues to gain momentum.
