President Maia Sandu on Sanctioning 4 ‘Characters’: EU Aids Our Efforts to Thwart Those Blocking Our Future

In a press statement on Tuesday, May 30th, the President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, announced that the European Union had sanctioned five individuals who threaten the country’s stability and security. Four of these individuals are Moldovan citizens. Sandu accused them of betraying the national interest, endangering Moldova’s development, and working in favor of the Kremlin.

The decision comes after the EU’s General Affairs Council adopted the first round of listings under the new EU sanctions regime aimed at countering destabilizing actions in the Republic of Moldova. The sanctioned individuals include Ilan Șor, Marina Tauber, Vlad Plahotniuc, and Gheorghe Cavcaliuc.

The package adopted on May 30th comprises five individuals listed under the sanctions regime for countering actions that destabilize the Republic of Moldova. It also includes two individuals listed under the regime of restrictive measures for actions undermining or threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine. The latter individuals are closely connected to the destabilizing actions in Moldova.

“Today’s decision means that these individuals will be restricted from free movement in countries aligning with the sanctions. Their assets will be frozen, and their funds will be seized. The European Union is helping us stop those who seek to destabilize our country and block our future,” commented President Maia Sandu.

It is worth noting that the political agreement on the creation of the sanctions regime was reached at the Foreign Affairs Council meeting on April 24, 2023, and the procedural finalization of the regime’s adoption took place on April 28, 2023. Romania played a central role in establishing this EU sanctions regime and compiling the list of individuals.

The sanctions serve as a significant step in addressing threats to Moldova’s stability and deterring those who work against the country’s interests. The EU’s support in combating destabilization is crucial in ensuring Moldova’s path toward a secure and prosperous future.
