President Maia Sandu’s message at the EPP Congress: “Russia wants to turn Moldova into a corridor of influence”

President Maia Sandu delivered a strong speech at the European People’s Party Congress, held from April 27 to 29 in Spain. She conveyed a message of European solidarity and reaffirmed Moldova’s commitment to its European path despite Russia’s ongoing hybrid threats.

“Let me begin by thanking the European People’s Party family for their continuous support for Moldova — in our fight against corruption, resistance to oligarchy, and efforts to overcome the consequences of Russia’s brutal war against Ukraine,” said the president.

Maia Sandu warned that Russia continues to undermine Moldova’s democracy through cyberattacks, disinformation, and attempts to influence elections. “This year, Moldova faces another election — and Russia will try again to interfere. The stakes are even higher: parliamentary elections will determine whether we stay on the European path or fall under foreign influence.”

She said Moldova chose to stand with the free world and highlighted Ukraine’s key role in protecting the entire region. “Ukraine is defending not only Moldova but all of Europe and the international order. That is why Ukraine needs even more military, economic, and moral support.”

In closing, President Sandu stated that EU enlargement is a strategic investment in security and democracy, arguing that Moldova and Ukraine deserve to be part of this community: “Europe will become stronger, safer, and more united by welcoming those who fight for its values.”
