The President of Romania, Nicusor Dan, stated that expanding the European Union to include the Republic of Moldova, Ukraine, and the Western Balkan states represents an investment in security, not an act of charity. He made this statement at the “High-Level Conference Cohesion2027+,” as reported by IPN. The Romanian head of state emphasized that Romania will strongly support the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union, noting that the country demonstrates a “real will to enter the European world” and must receive support in this process. Nicusor Dan stressed that EU expansion is essential for strengthening security on the Eastern Flank in the context of current geopolitical challenges.

In his speech, the Romanian President also addressed the need for a more competitive and united Europe, highlighting the importance of the single market, innovation, and reducing disparities between member states. He warned that unequal competition in innovation could deepen economic gaps and generate social tensions, affecting European stability.

Nicusor Dan also mentioned that next year will be intense and decisive for defining the strategic directions of the European Union for 2028–2034, and he called for broad involvement in the European decision-making process.
