Prime Minister Dorin Recean: We are fighting a criminal group organized and sponsored from outside with exorbitant sums

Moldova is intensifying efforts against an organized crime ring funded from abroad with substantial sums, amounting to nearly 2 percent of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Prime Minister Dorin Recean made this statement today, highlighting the urgency of addressing electoral fraud observed in recent presidential elections. Recean emphasized the need for a “systemic approach” to prevent the recurrence of such actions over the long term.

“We are fighting against an organized crime network funded abroad with exorbitant sums, representing almost 2 percent of Moldova’s GDP. It is an unprecedented attack and a new form of hybrid warfare that targets the foundation of democracy,” Recean said. “We must proceed swiftly in investigating these criminal cases and take the necessary legal actions. Equally important is that prosecutors and judges expedite these cases to bring them to a conclusion. The problem persists because about 15-20 individuals remain unpunished; they continue to perpetuate fraud and crime,” Recean added.

The Prime Minister also outlined forthcoming actions in the justice sector. “In recent days, I have collaborated with the Ministry of Justice and consulted independent bodies like the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) and the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) to address this phenomenon. Despite recent attempts at rigging partially stopped through interventions by the police, the National Anticorruption Centre, and some judges and prosecutors, we still need a comprehensive strategy. We cannot approach this with ‘white gloves’—we must also rethink our approach,” Recean stated.
