Cristin Ghemu, a prosecutor with the Ialoveni Prosecutor’s Office who is under investigation in a $400,000 corruption case, has been released from house arrest and placed under judicial supervision. The decision was upheld by the Chișinău Court of Appeal (Centru).
On July 16, the Chișinău Court, Ciocana office, rejected prosecutors’ request to extend Ghemu’s house arrest and instead ordered that he be placed under judicial supervision for 30 days.
Dissatisfied with the ruling, prosecutors appealed, seeking to reinstate the house arrest measure.
“The Chișinău Court of Appeal (Centru) rejected the appeal filed by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, upholding the decision of the Chișinău Court, Ciocana office, which placed the defendant under judicial supervision for a period of 30 days. The Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office continues its investigation to establish all the circumstances of the case,” the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office said.
Ghemu and two police officers were detained on March 31 on suspicion of participating in a corruption scheme in which they allegedly requested a $400,000 bribe to influence the outcome of a money laundering case.
According to investigators, part of the money was transferred under the supervision of law enforcement authorities as part of the investigation. The inquiry remains ongoing as prosecutors seek to establish all the circumstances of the case and identify any additional accomplices.
