The parliament will start discussing the issue of introducing a provision on European integration into the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova. This was announced by the chairman of the legislative Igor Grosu.
He noted that even though the PAS does not have a constitutional majority to amend the Supreme Legislation of the country, the required number of votes could be found. According to Grosu, some opposition MPs could moderate their Euroscepticism against the backdrop of major foreign policy events planned before the end of this year.
“We will promote this in Parliament and discuss it with other deputies. You can say that we do not have enough voices, but if we get to work, communicate, and in the end, I believe that after the European Moldova Assembly and after other events that will follow this year, even those who were still skeptical, will show more determination and confidence in our European path. So nothing is impossible. The summit EPC to be held on June 1 is one of the most important events. This event will confirm the support of the Republic of Moldova by the EU Member States. The “European Moldova” meeting is, I think, an irrefutable argument that the citizens are in favor of European integration. In addition, the summit is also an opportunity to see and feel our hospitality. This is the first historical event when Moldova hosts so many prime ministers and presidents of EU countries. We will show that we can be hospitable, good organizers, Europeans,” Igor Grosu said.
Moldova is set to host the European Political Community Summit on June 1st, 2023, an event that will bring together nearly 50 leaders of states and around 1,000 foreign journalists. The European Political Community is a forum created last year, where European leaders discuss solutions to the most urgent problems facing Europe, such as security, stability, and energy resilience.
