Moldovan MP Renato Usatii swore in Parliament after a majority of lawmakers from the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) voted against establishing a national day of remembrance for victims of domestic violence.
The initiative was proposed by Elena Gritco, an MP from the Our Party.
Usatii said his party had consistently supported what he described as “sound” initiatives, but criticized the governing party, particularly its male MPs, for voting against the proposal.
“For me, this is becoming a very sad thing. We have become accustomed to having 20 or 30 women killed, and then all the parties go to the graves with flowers and wreaths, and after that the initiative is supported,” Usatii said.
The MP thanked 10 PAS lawmakers who abstained rather than voting against the initiative. He noted that the same MPs had previously been applauded for their vote on the Declaration of Independence of the Republic of Moldova.
“We have no elections this year, and that is why the governing party does not support it. But don’t be upset, this is complete b******t,” Usatii said, using profanity in the parliamentary chamber.
PAS MP Marcela Adam responded, explaining why her party did not support establishing a memorial day for victims of domestic violence.
“Please, let us not politicize human dramas or tragedies. Domestic violence cannot be fought through a single day marked on the calendar. This initiative adds nothing concrete, does not create new services, does not strengthen institutions and does not save lives,” Adam said.
