Voting abroad started on Thursday evening, 1 May 2025, at 22:00 (Romanian time), with the first polling station opening in Auckland, New Zealand, at 07:00 local time. Authorities sent 3.6 million ballot papers to the 965 polling stations abroad.
According to Romanian officials, citizens living outside the country can vote for the next president over three days, following this schedule:
- Friday, 2 May: from 07:00 to 21:00 (local time)
- Saturday, 3 May: from 07:00 to 21:00 (local time)
- Sunday, 4 May: from 07:00 to 21:00 (local time), without exceeding 21:00 Romanian time
Voters can use the following identification documents:
- National ID card
- electronic ID card
- temporary ID card
- identity bulletin
- diplomatic passport or electronic diplomatic passport
- service passport or electronic service passport
- regular passport, electronic passport, or temporary passport
- military service card (for students in military schools)

Also, Maia Sandu urged citizens today to actively participate in the elections.
“Dear Romanian citizens with the right to vote in the Republic of Moldova, on May 2, 3, and 4, we have the chance to make our voices heard – to vote in the Romanian presidential elections at any of the 64 polling stations open here.
Democracy means having a say. Every vote matters. Every decision can shape Romania’s path. I urge you to participate in the vote – for a democratic and European Romania, our trusted and close partner,” the head of state stated in her message.
The Romanian Consulate General in Chisinau confirmed that 64 polling stations are open across Moldova: 18 in the North, 38 in the Centre (including 20 in Chisinau municipality), and 8 in the South.
