START VOTING! Polling stations in the country and abroad have opened

Today, October 20, the Republic of Moldova holds presidential elections and a referendum on joining the European Union. All polling stations, in the country and abroad, opened at 07:00 Moldovan time. Around three million citizens are expected to vote, with 2,221 polling stations in operation.

Of these, 1,957 polling stations are in constituencies within the country, 30 serve voters in localities on the left bank of the Dniester, and 234 are for citizens voting abroad.

In the Chisinau constituency, including suburbs, voters will be expected to exercise their right to vote at 306 polling stations.

Abroad, election officials’ working hours are set according to the local time zone, with the first to start work in China and Japan.

Voters will choose one of the 11 candidates vying to become president of Moldova: Alexandr Stoianoglo, Maia Sandu, Renato Usatii, Vasile Tarlev, Irina Vlah, Ion Chicu, Andrei Nastase, Octavian Ticu, Victoria Furtuna, Tudor Ulianovschi and Natalia Morari.

In the republican constitutional referendum, voters will answer “YES” or “NO” to the question “Do you support amending the Constitution with a view to Moldova’s accession to the European Union?”

Polling stations will close at 21:00 in Moldova and abroad, based on local time in each country. If lines form, officials may extend voting hours by up to two hours.

Afterward, officials will begin processing ballot papers and announcing the first preliminary results.
