The accession of the Republic of Moldova to the EU – a priority for Poland

In an interview with rbc.ua, Polish President Andrzej Duda stated that “One of our priorities during Poland’s presidency of the European Union Council will be the accession of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova to the EU.”

President Duda added that “Poland is in favor of an ‘open door’ policy, so the EU should also accept Western Balkan countries… Prime Minister (Mateusz Morawiecki) and I know perfectly well what it means to wait a long time, what it means to want to be part of the free West, to which we belong politically today.”

It is worth mentioning that Poland will preside over the European Union Council in the first half of 2025.

The European Council has granted candidate country status for European Union accession to the Republic of Moldova. This status was also granted to the neighboring state, Ukraine, in June 2022. Authorities in Chișinău have declared that the decision made by all 27 European leaders at the European Union Council Summit is a historic one that opens a new chapter in the modern history of the country.
