At the next national election, the Central Electoral Commission (CEC) will open fewer polling stations for citizens of the Republic of Moldova living abroad. Deputy Chair Pavel Postica announced the decision during the Rezoomat program on RliveTV.
During the September 28 parliamentary elections, the CEC opened 301 polling stations for the Moldovan diaspora. Postica said the expansion was justified, even though voter turnout was lower than in the 2024 presidential elections.
“We increased the number of polling stations for the diaspora based on legal provisions tied to voter participation trends, which had been rising. We were therefore required to expand the network,” Postica explained.
He added that the situation has now changed, as voter participation abroad has dropped.
“Now we see the opposite trend — a decline in turnout. This means that for the next national elections, we will have to reduce the number of polling stations abroad,” Postica said. “I can’t say by how much yet. We need to make detailed calculations.”
