The Commission for Emergency Situations in Moldova asks to extend the state of emergency for 60 days due to the war in Ukraine

On Monday, July 31, at the last meeting of the spring-summer session of parliament, deputies must approve the government’s demand to extend the state of emergency for another 60 days. The decision will come into force on August 3rd.

The Commission for Emergency Situations (ECS), headed by Prime Minister Dorin Rechan, explains its necessity to the aggravation of the situation in Ukraine.

“In addition, the suspension of the grain export agreement through the Black Sea basin imposed by Russia on July 17 will affect Moldova. The disruption of the maritime logistics chain will lead to an increase in the transit of grain through the Republic of Moldova. This may entail risks of disruption of the activity of checkpoints with the European Union, which will lead to the formation of kilometer-long queues at the border with Romania. This will hurt road safety and the national road infrastructure,” the document says.

Since February 24, 2022, when the Russian army entered Ukraine, the Chisinau government has declared a state of emergency, which is constantly being extended.

On May 26, Prime Minister Dorin Recean, once again addressing parliament with a request to extend the state of emergency, said that his team would complete the initiative to change the legislative framework in June, as a result of which he would no longer have to address MPs every time.
