The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has appointed Catarina Bjorlin Hansen as the new director for its office in the Republic of Moldova. The incoming director will assume her responsibilities at the beginning of September.
Expressing her enthusiasm, Catarina Bjorlin Hansen stated, “I am thrilled to lead the Bank’s operations in Moldova, a country that plays a crucial geostrategic role in the EBRD’s portfolio. During my tenure, I will focus on driving investments that will help Moldova overcome its economic challenges and foster closer ties with the European Union.”
Hailing from Sweden, Bjorlin Hansen currently serves as the regional director of the EBRD’s office for the Caucasus, based in Tbilisi. She boasts over 20 years of experience in the banking sector and has held various leadership positions within the EBRD.

Catarina Bjorlin Hansen will succeed Angela Sax, who has led the EBRD’s operations in Moldova since 2018. Under Angela Sax’s tenure, the EBRD significantly increased its lending in Moldova, reaching a historic record of 525 million euros in 2022.
The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development remains a significant investor in the Republic of Moldova. To date, the Bank has invested over 2 billion euros in the country through 166 projects.
