The European Union welcomed the referendum, stating that Moldovan citizens made a historic choice to secure their future within the EU. This decision comes despite significant interference and a hybrid campaign by Russia and its agents aimed at undermining Moldova’s democratic process. The EU Delegation to Chisinau made this statement on Tuesday.
The EU commended the authorities for organizing the electoral process and the referendum according to democratic standards.
“On October 20, Moldovan citizens participated in the first round of the presidential elections and the referendum. The European Union applauds the referendum’s outcome. Moldovan citizens have made a historic choice to anchor their future within the EU, even in the face of substantial interference and a hybrid campaign by Russia and its agents. This vote reflects their aspirations for a peaceful, independent, stable, democratic, and prosperous Moldova,” the EU Delegation to Chisinau stated.
