The “ghost” airport comes back to life: Marculesti wants to become an air hub. Estimated investment – €4.2 million

Parliament has approved, in the first reading, a draft law that aims to modernize Marculesti Airport and transform it into a regional air hub capable of handling cargo and commercial passenger flights, bani.md reports.

The bill proposes transferring the airport under the state-owned enterprise “Chisinau International Airport” management to ensure strategic coordination of investments and development efforts. According to the draft, adapting the airport to meet passenger transport standards will require an estimated investment of €4.2 million.

“The growing demand for air services makes the modernization of Marculesti Airport essential for attracting low-cost airlines and fostering development in the northern region,” the explanatory note states.

Located 150 kilometers from Chisinau, Marculesti Airport features a runway with a higher load-bearing capacity than the capital’s airport, enabling it to accommodate larger aircraft. The airport operates on a limited scale, providing aerodrome services and leasing infrastructure.

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development developed the draft law with the Public Property Agency. Parliament will examine the proposal in a second reading before giving final approval.
