The Moldovan government reacted to a proposal by the Romanian authorities to allow the military to “take necessary measures” on the territory of other states to protect Romanian citizens

The Moldovan government commented on April 3 on the Romanian Defense Ministry’s proposal to allow the military to “take necessary measures” on the territory of other states if Romanian citizens there are in danger. Cabinet spokesman Daniel Voda emphasized that Moldova is a neutral state and only citizens can change this in a referendum.

“Moldova is a neutral state. This neutrality is supported by everyone, including the country’s citizens, and any changes in this area are possible only with the citizens’ approval. We want peace, tranquility, and development of the country, as well as progress on the European path. This is what the government wants. All kinds of purely theoretical statements, based on no facts, I propose not to discuss at this stage, but to put them in several unrealized assumptions,” Voda stressed, newsmaker.md reports.

Recall that the day before, on April 2, the Romanian Ministry of National Defense submitted for public discussion a draft law on the country’s national defense. According to the document, the new law will allow the Romanian military to “take necessary measures” on the territory of other states if Romanian citizens there are threatened. Intervention to prevent hybrid threats, which include both military and non-military, on Romanian territory or outside it will take place on the recommendation of the Romanian president and with the approval of the Supreme National Defense Council.
