The Popular Assembly of Gagauzia has filed an appeal with the Supreme Court of Justice against the Southern Court of Appeal’s decision, which had suspended the Comrat lawmakers’ resolutions regarding the election date in the autonomous region. The appeal is dated April 9.

Igor Grosu stated that the accusations from Comrat against constitutional authorities are unfounded. He emphasized that the election must take place this year and suggested that a joint working group of the Legislature and the Popular Assembly is needed to unblock the process.

Grosu did not clarify whether the elections could coincide with local and bascan elections, nor did he reveal potential PAS candidates. He explained that the Electoral Code for Gagauzia came into force a year later than in the rest of Moldova, allowing an extra year for the region, which he now considers a mistake.

The Constitutional Court’s date for examining the Ministry of Justice’s request on the Popular Assembly’s electoral powers remains unknown, though the Legislature’s opinion has been requested.

Elections for the Popular Assembly were initially set for November 16, 2025, but were blocked due to the absence of a functional legislative framework. They were later scheduled for March 22, 2026, but postponed after the CSJ suspended the execution of the Popular Assembly’s December 16, 2025 resolutions regarding the creation of an electoral structure in Comrat. In March, the Popular Assembly set a new election date of June 21.

Following the conviction of Evghenia Guțul, the region’s Executive Committee remains in deadlock, with Ilia Uzun currently holding the interim position of governor.
