According to the data of the National Bureau of Statistics, in 2022, the population of the Republic of Moldova permanently residing in the country decreased by 2 percent.
The population with permanent residence in Moldova as of January 1, 2023, was 2.5 million people, which is 52 thousand less than at the beginning of the previous year.
The female population in Moldova, as in previous years, prevails: at the beginning of 2023, it is estimated that there were 1.3 million women, or 52.7% of the country’s population, and 1.1 million men, or 47.3% of the population.
According to the NBS, the decline in the population was largely influenced by migration: in 2021, a value of 45.4 thousand people was recorded, and in 2022 – 43 thousand people.
