Members of the Cabinet of Ministers will meet today, March 24, at 13:00 in an extraordinary session chaired by Prime Minister Alexandru Munteanu.

The head of government announced that he will propose introducing a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days following attacks by the Russian Federation on energy infrastructure in Ukraine, which have also affected the Republic of Moldova.

“I have convened the Government meeting today at 13:00, and we will propose introducing a state of emergency in the energy sector for 60 days. This is not a measure of panic, but of responsibility,” the prime minister said.

Overnight strikes disconnected the Vulcanesti–Isaccea power line, Moldova’s main electricity supply link.

“All four interconnection lines with Romania have been activated, but the situation remains complicated. The Russian Federation bears sole responsibility,” Munteanu added, describing the attacks as “a war crime” and “an attack against us.”

The prime minister said that declaring a state of emergency would allow authorities to act quickly, mobilize additional resources, and protect critical infrastructure to limit the impact of the crisis.

“This afternoon, I will go to the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova together with ministers and officials directly involved in managing the situation, to present all the arguments and request the support of deputies. Our goal is clear: to take all necessary actions so that every citizen is safe and has access to basic needs,” he stated.

Authorities reported that the Isaccea–Vulcanesti power line remains disconnected after attacks on energy infrastructure in southern Ukraine. The operator Moldelectrica is ensuring electricity supply through internal sources and alternative import routes in cooperation with operators from Romania and Ukraine.

Officials urge citizens to use electricity responsibly, especially during peak hours, to avoid overloading the grid.
