During the period from July 1 to November 26, 2023, the Republic of Moldova was the largest supplier of sunflower seeds, holding a share of approximately 63%, according to data published by Lanțul Alimentar.
Thus, over this period, the EU imported a total of 190,619 tons of sunflower seeds, marking an 85% decrease compared to the same period last year, as reported by mold-street.com.
According to the Lanțul Alimentar publication, the main sources of import were Moldova (119,983 tons, compared to 108,093 tons in 2022), Ukraine (experiencing a drastic decrease from 1,085,480 tons to 35,760 tons, with the current market share being 18.8%, down from 86.7% last year), China, Turkey, and Argentina.
Moreover, Romania imported the largest quantity of sunflower seeds during this period, with a volume of 78,836 tons, followed by Bulgaria with 38,929 tons and Spain with 13,739 tons.
Simultaneously, during this period, Romania was the leading exporter of sunflower seeds from the EU, with a volume of 64,053 tons. In second place was Bulgaria with 33,363 tons, followed by Croatia with 20,665 tons.

In total, the EU exported 131,853 tons of sunflower seeds, with the top five destinations being Pakistan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, China, and the United Kingdom. Exports decreased by 9% compared to the same period last year.
Lanțul Alimentar notes that the price of sunflower seeds delivered from Ukraine was 314 euros/ton on November 29, while in Bordeaux, the price was 434 euros/ton, according to updated data from the European Commission.
