The USA Grants Moldova $220 Million for Energy Sector Investments

The Government of the United States of America will grant our country $220 million for implementing investment projects in the energy sector. The bill ratifying the 15th Amendment to the Development Objective Assistance Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Moldova and the Government of the United States of America for sustainable economic growth anchored in European integration was passed in the second reading by 56 deputies.

According to the document, the US Government will allocate an additional financial contribution of $220 million. This additional funding is provided to strengthen our country’s energy security and reduce dependence on the Russian Federation by connecting the energy sector in the Republic of Moldova to European systems, attracting investments in local energy production, diversifying natural gas supplies, and improving energy efficiency.

The total funding under the Development Objective Assistance Agreement for sustainable economic growth anchored in European integration will exceed $392 million, which constitutes non-repayable assistance to our country.

The Agreement also sets conditions for the provision of budgetary support by the US Government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), amounting to $76.8 million. According to the Agreement, the Government of the Republic of Moldova commits to aligning with the European Union’s Energy Agenda. In this context, the authorities will continue the process of harmonizing the legal framework of the Republic of Moldova with the EU Acquis.
