The separatist authorities in Tiraspol plan to expand the ban on the use of the term “Transnistria” so that it applies in any language. The region’s so-called Supreme Soviet has registered a legislative initiative to this effect.
According to the source, the draft law follows an order signed on June 1 by Vadim Krasnoselsky. Under the current rules, authorities penalize only the use of the term in Russian. The proposed amendments would extend the restriction to all languages.
The draft law provides for fines ranging from 210 to 420 Transnistrian rubles (approximately $13–$26) for individuals, or administrative detention of up to 15 days. Authorities could fine public officials up to 840 Transnistrian rubles (about $52), while legal entities could face penalties of up to 10,500 Transnistrian rubles (around $652).
The Tiraspol administration introduced the ban on the use of the name “Transnistria” in September 2024. At the time, it classified the use of the term as equivalent to the promotion of Nazism.
