In a recent interview, Jānis Mažeiks, the EU Ambassador to Chisinau, addressed the issue of the Transnistrian conflict and its potential impact on Moldova’s European course. He emphasized that while the conflict poses challenges, it is an inherent part of Moldova’s practical European integration, writes infoPrut.ro.
When asked whether the Transnistrian conflict could hinder Moldova’s European aspirations, Mažeiks highlighted that the region’s issue is part of Moldova’s practical path toward European integration. He pointed out that Moldova already benefits from the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) agreement, which is also implemented in the Transnistrian region.
Furthermore, he noted that approximately two-thirds of Transnistria’s exports are directed toward EU markets, indicating a significant integration towards the European Union. Mažeiks also emphasized that negotiations would play a crucial role in Moldova’s accession process, and it is likely that discussions would touch upon matters concerning the Transnistrian region. However, the evolution of these negotiations remains uncertain, as they typically span several years for all countries aspiring to EU membership.

It is worth mentioning that on June 1st, during the European Political Community Summit, Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that Moldova independently decides the fate of the Transnistrian region. Borrell compared this situation to Cyprus, which became an EU member despite having its own territorial dispute, highlighting that Moldova, too, can navigate these challenges.
The Transnistrian conflict undoubtedly presents obstacles for Moldova, but with ongoing efforts towards European integration and the involvement of EU institutions, the country aims to find sustainable solutions that contribute to its overall development and progress.
