The NGO Forum 2024 took place in Chisinau over two days, bringing together more than 200 non-governmental organizations, public authority representatives, development partners, international experts, and community members. This year’s theme, “Civil Society for European Integration,” highlighted the crucial role of civil society in Moldova’s EU accession negotiations.
Janis Mazeiks, Head of the European Union to Moldova Delegation, emphasized civil society’s vital role in achieving the national strategic goal of European integration.
“Civil society has been and is our reliable partner in this journey. That is why we will continue to support the development and empowerment of civil society to support the authorities in carrying out the necessary reforms to become a member of the European Community”, says Jānis Mazeiks, Head of the European Union Delegation to Moldova.
“You are the driving force for change in your countries. You can push your governments. You can convince your fellow citizens in the cities where you work. So the work you do is important. So, first of all, I want to thank you all for your dedication, commitment, and what you do in sometimes difficult conditions,” says Verena Zell, Head of Development Cooperation, German Embassy.
Over the two days, participants discussed civil society’s role in the EU accession process, explored solutions, and shared impactful initiatives across various voluntary sectors. They also presented case studies and good practices from the region.

“We need the involvement of civil society because we do not want only one perspective, the government’s, to be reflected in the legislation. The expertise of civil society is essential in every negotiation chapter, which is why we continue to encourage your active involvement,” said Rodica Jereghi, Deputy Head of the European Integration Office.
The forum also discussed European financial opportunities for NGOs in our country and strategies for the sustainable development of civil society.
“We are talking about the normative acts that underpin the development of civil society. Of course, there is a new program adopted in 2024. It is the program for civil society organizations’ development. We are determined to implement it effectively, monitor every action closely, and avoid repeating the past mistakes of abandoning strategies halfway. The approach is serious, I can assure you of that,” says Ana Calinici, Secretary of State of the Government.
The NGO Council and the CONTACT Centre organized the NGO Forum 2024 with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and the European Union.
