After judoka Denis Vieru and wrestler Anastasia Nikita, two more Moldovan athletes are at the top of the world rankings in their respective sports at the beginning of this year – canoeists Elena Glizan and Serghei Tarnovski.
According to the Ministry of Education, canoeist Elena Glizan started 2024 as the world-ranking leader in the 1,000-meter distance. With 180 points in total, she surpassed Hungary’s Sofia Kishban and Kazakhstan’s Maria Brovkova. Elena Glizan is also among the leaders in the 5,000 meters. She is in second place with a total score of 204 points.

Sergey Tarnovsky also started 2024 with the second step of the world ranking. The European Games bronze medalist in the 500 meters is in second place with 254 points.
Three of the seven athletes who qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris are canoeists: Serghei Tarnovski, Daniela Cociu, and Maria Olarasu.
