Victor Negrescu has called for the opening of cluster-based negotiations for the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, citing a favorable political context following recent elections in Hungary.

The official announced that he sent a letter to António Costa, urging the acceleration of Moldova’s accession process.

According to Negrescu, the election outcome in Hungary creates “a new window of opportunity” for a decision that had previously been delayed, partly due to the unanimity rule and opposition from the government in Budapest.

“The decision of the European Council could be taken at the first formal meeting in June or agreed immediately at the level of ambassadors. The Republic of Moldova has made real progress and has demonstrated its commitment to the European path. Opening negotiations on clusters would provide new momentum for the necessary reforms and would also strengthen cooperation with Romania. It is time for the European Union to confirm this path through a clear decision,” he stated.

Previously, Moldova began technical-level discussions with the European Commission and the Danish Presidency on three of the six negotiation clusters: Fundamental Values, Internal Market, and External Relations.

This was announced at the time by Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov, who emphasized that these clusters form the core of accession negotiations and are essential for any future EU member state.
