The State University of Moldova, in partnership with the Embassy of Japan in Chisinau, inaugurated on Tuesday, May 14, the Laboratory for Digitization of the book collection of the USM Library, equipped with digital transcription equipment of volumes of books, scientific works, and manuscripts from the collection of the Central Library and other works. The book scanning and data management equipment, worth more than US$70,800, is part of the “Kusanone” Culture Grant Program offered by the Government of Japan.
The USM Rector Igor Sharov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Republic of Moldova, H.E. Yamada Yoichiro, USM Pro-Rector for Digitization Sergiu Corlat and Head of the USM Library Lilia Dogoter attended the inauguration event.
“Having heard a lot about the excellence of Moldovan professors and the brilliance of their students, I am glad and proud that Japan was able to contribute to the digitization of the State University of Moldova, which is the flagship of academic research and higher education in the Republic of Moldova. I hope Japan-Moldova inter-university cooperation will increase and expand as the country moves closer to the European Union,” said the Ambassador of Japan to the Republic of Moldova, H.E. Yamada Yoichiro.

For his part, the rector of the State University of Moldova, Igor Sharov, thanked the Japanese Government and the Embassy of Japan in Chisinau for their confidence in the capacity of the USM to develop the Digitisation Project, which complements and shows the role of the university in a world of development and digitization.
The USM took a grant of US$70,814 under the “Kusanone” Culture Grant Program, funded by the Government of Japan.
