The Moldovan Police will ensure citizens feel safe on election day, said Viorel Cernauteanu, Head of the National Police, in an interview with Realitatea. He did not reveal the number of officers deployed, citing security reasons, but confirmed that law enforcement will actively prevent risks and electoral corruption.

Cernauteanu explained that under current regulations, police intervene at polling stations only when the head of the electoral bureau requests their presence. However, officers will act immediately in exceptional cases that require urgent action.

“According to the Electoral Code, police handle incidents inside or near polling stations only if the head of the station requests it. But if, God forbid, a serious incident occurs — for example, a fight — officers cannot wait; they intervene immediately. Normally, incidents like ballot theft or photographing ballots happen only after the head requests intervention,” Cernauteanu said.

He noted that common electoral violations include offering goods in exchange for votes or organizing group transport to polling stations. Recently, attempts to buy votes have increased.

“In previous years, people organized transport with cars, minibuses, or buses. Last year, we even saw airplanes used — something I don’t think has ever happened in any other country’s elections. That speaks volumes,” he added.

The Police Chief emphasized that officers are prepared for any post-election scenarios, while citizens retain the right to peaceful protests and gatherings. Police will intervene only to stop destabilizing actions and will hold responsible parties accountable.
