(VIDEO) Maia Sandu: Chisinau Will Not Impose Obstacles if the Kremlin Resumes Gas Deliveries to Transnistria

Chisinau will not impose obstacles if the Kremlin decides to resume gas deliveries to the left bank of the Dniester. The statement was made by President Maia Sandu following the January 14 meeting of the Supreme Security Council.

The president confirmed reports about Vadim Krasnoselski’s visit to Moscow. At the same time, she stated that Gazprom is responsible for causing the energy crisis in the Transnistrian region.

”We will allow gas to reach the Transnistrian region. We want this humanitarian crisis to end as quickly as possible. However, we will continue taking all necessary measures to ensure the energy security of the Republic of Moldova,” Sandu emphasized.

Sandu also noted that government members are exploring ways to hold Gazprom accountable for unilaterally breaching the gas supply contract. According to the president, the agreement between Chisinau authorities and the Russian company is valid until 2026.

As of January 1, 2025, Gazprom has stopped delivering gas to the left bank of the Dniester, citing the expiration of the transit agreement through Ukraine. Moldovan authorities highlighted that gas could have been supplied via the TurkStream pipeline, bypassing Ukraine.

Vadim Ceban, the head of Moldovagaz, stated on RLIVE TV that the decision is politically motivated. In his view, decisions regarding gas deliveries are no longer under the control of his company or the Russian energy giant.
