Romania’s President Nicusor Dan described the upcoming September 28 parliamentary elections in Moldova as a “dispute between East and West” over the country’s strategic direction. He made the remarks in an interview with Antena3 CNN.

Dan said he had “serious concerns” about possible Russian influence but stressed that Romania must not directly interfere in the elections of a sovereign state. He reaffirmed that Moldovan citizens alone must decide their country’s future.

The president warned that Russia could seek electoral gains “with stamps, not with weapons,” pointing to risks of undemocratic vote manipulation. He predicted a tight race and urged Moldovan citizens—especially those living in Romania—to cast their ballots, emphasizing that “every vote counts.” He added that Romanian authorities will provide practical information on election days about where and how Moldovans in Romania can vote.

Recalling the 2024 presidential elections and the EU referendum, Dan cited cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, disinformation campaigns, and alleged vote-buying networks. He referenced estimates that 80,000–100,000 votes may have been influenced in favor of pro-Russian forces, calling it a stark warning about the scale of manipulation.

At the same time, Dan reiterated Romania’s commitment to support Moldova “as much as it can,” but underscored that this must not be mistaken for interference in Chisinau’s electoral sovereignty.
