(VIDEO) Romania’s President Nicusor Dan Backs Moldova’s Pro-European Path as Sandu Hails Solidarity Amid Regional Threats

In the September parliamentary elections, Romania will support the pro-European trajectory of the Republic of Moldova, Nicusor Dan announced. The leader from Cotroceni emphasized that he shares an interest in regional security.

Dan noted that both Maia Sandu and the PAS party supported his presidential candidacy. At the same time, the leader from Bucharest highlighted that voters, including those from the Republic of Moldova, chose Romania’s predictable, pro-Western direction.

“As President of Romania, with a vested interest in the Republic of Moldova and the security of the region we live in—including Romania’s security—I strongly want the pro-Western, pro-European direction to prevail in the Republic of Moldova,” Nicusor Dan concluded.

The Romanian head of state reiterated his commitment to supporting Moldova’s accession to the European Union. He stated that Moldovan officials can adopt Romania’s expertise throughout this process.

President Maia Sandu thanked Romania for being a pillar for Ukraine during the war.

“If Moldova fell into Russia’s hands, not only Chisinau but also Bucharest and Odesa would face threats. A Moldova that resists means safety for our families. The truth is, we couldn’t resist alone. Ukraine is our shield—and yours. As long as Ukraine fights for its freedom, we can live in ours. Every act of help for Ukraine also supports Moldova. We thank Romania for standing with Ukraine,” President Sandu said.

She highlighted joint Moldovan-Romanian projects in culture, tourism, infrastructure, and the economy. She also highlighted the creation of joint border checkpoints, faster customs procedures, and Moldova’s progress toward EU membership.

“Regardless of what Kremlin voices claim, we can see Romania’s modernization in every area. For those across the Prut who remain uncertain, Moldova’s continued vulnerability outside the European Union serves as clear evidence. Look at the gaps between our two sides. Only European funds can close them,” Sandu added, addressing skeptics of EU integration.

“Romania supports your efforts—not only diplomatically but also practically, wherever our expertise is needed,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of Moldova’s upcoming parliamentary elections on September 28. President Dan thanked Sandu for the warm welcome and invited her to visit Bucharest.
