The PAS MP and footballer Maxim Potirniche proposed allocating 12 million lei from the state budget to finance a feasibility study for the construction of a new national arena. He submitted an amendment to the draft State Budget Law to support this initiative.
The lawmaker said the feasibility study represents a mandatory step for launching a potential national stadium project and for attracting external funding, including European funds and financing from UEFA and FIFA. He stressed that without such a document, authorities cannot start procurement procedures or make well founded investment decisions.
Maxim Potirniche argued that the study would prove the strategic, economic, and social necessity of the investment and would create the conditions for hosting international sports competitions and major cultural events in the Republic of Moldova.
At the same time, the Republic of Moldova already operates Arena Chisinau, a multifunctional sports complex inaugurated in recent years that hosts sporting competitions and large scale events. However, the PAS MP said the country needs an international level sports arena that meets the standards required for major competitions.
The initiative comes as Parliament examines the draft state budget for 2026, which lawmakers have already approved in the first reading. Authorities will submit the budget for a final vote in the coming period.
