The completion and commissioning of the Vulcanesti–Chisinau high-voltage power line in August, expanding electricity generation capacity, and strengthening energy interconnections with Romania are among the main energy-sector priorities outlined in the Tofan Government’s program. Acting Minister of Energy Dorin Junghietu highlighted these objectives after the document was published.
According to Junghietu, Moldova has overcome its dependence on a single energy source and successfully connected to European energy markets. The next stage, he said, is to transform that energy security into economic growth, increased investment, and more predictable utility bills for consumers.
In addition to commissioning the Vulcanesti–Chisinau power line, the government plans to build new electricity interconnections with Romania and fully integrate Moldova’s energy market into the European market.
The program also includes investments in new electricity generation capacity, flexible gas-fired power plants, battery storage systems, and renewable energy. Among its targets are increasing the share of renewable energy to more than 35%, developing at least 1,200 MWh of energy storage capacity by 2028, and building flexible gas-fired power plants with a combined capacity of at least 100 MW.
The authorities also plan to continue modernizing district heating systems, invest in improving the energy efficiency of buildings, maintain support for vulnerable consumers, and further reform the energy sector in line with European Union regulations.
The government program, titled “European Economy, Efficient State,” is scheduled to be presented to Parliament on July 21 by Prime Minister-designate Vasile Tofan and his ministerial team, who will seek a vote of confidence from lawmakers.
