Institutional tensions between central authorities and those in the autonomy continue. The State Chancellery of the Republic of Moldova, through its Territorial Office in Comrat, sent an official request to the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia asking it to annul several decisions adopted on March 17. The document, signed by Serghei Cernev, mainly targets decisions on approving the composition of the Gagauzia Central Electoral Commission, regulating regional elections, and setting the election date, according to Gagauzinfo.MD.

Government representatives argue that the assembly’s deputies exceeded their powers by adopting decisions they consider illegal, including the relaunch of regional elections. The Territorial Office stated that after autumn 2025, the regional legislature no longer has the authority to amend the local electoral legal framework. Authorities also criticized how the regional electoral body was established, citing discrepancies in its official name.

According to Gagauzinfo.MD, if the People’s Assembly does not repeal the contested decisions within 30 days, the Territorial Office will take the case to court to seek their annulment.

On March 17, the People’s Assembly decided to establish a new electoral body and set June 21 as the election date after the Supreme Court of Justice of Moldova had previously suspended decisions regarding its composition, blocking elections initially scheduled for March.

At the same time, the Ministry of Justice of Moldova referred the issue to the Constitutional Court of Moldova to clarify the powers of Gagauz authorities in organizing elections.
