In a major development for the country’s infrastructure, the Republic of Moldova has secured a loan of €23 million from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and received a grant of €20 million for the rehabilitation of railway routes. The project focuses on the Vălcineț – Ocnița – Bălți – Ungheni – Chișinău – Căinari section.
The government has approved the initiation of negotiations, with Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Lilia Dabija, representing Moldova’s interests in the discussions.
According to the project details, the loan from the EBRD will be disbursed in two tranches. The first tranche will amount to €12 million, while the second tranche will be €11 million.
Moldova is set to repay the loan in 24 equal semi-annual installments, starting from the interest payment dates each year. Notably, the second tranche is non-conditional and does not incur any interest, fees, or charges until it is requested for disbursement.

The funds will be channeled to the “Calea Ferată din Moldova” (Moldovan Railway) as the designated beneficiary. The loan will be recredited and granted to the enterprise, which will be responsible for its repayment.
This strategic financial support from the EBRD and the grant for railway track rehabilitation marks a significant step towards enhancing Moldova’s transportation infrastructure and facilitating smoother connectivity within the country.
