The President of the Parliament, Igor Grosu, has called for tougher sanctions for violating traffic rules. The request was made during a plenary session of the Parliament, in the context of several recent traffic accidents resulting in human casualties.
“Let’s consider more drastic sanctions. Let them be a pedestrian or a passenger for life if they can’t refrain, can’t control themselves, and don’t understand how serious it is to drive drunk. They should lose their driver’s license for life. It will be better for both them and those around them,” the legislative leader stated.
At the same time, the President of the Parliament urged the National Security, Defense, and Public Order Committee to hold discussions on this matter with all responsible institutions in the field.
Igor Grosu has also requested the Legal, Appointments, and Immunities Committee to review the legislation in order to introduce stricter provisions for drivers who cause accidents while under the influence of alcohol or without a driver’s license.
According to the Parliament, they will be studying Romania’s experience in this regard, including the implementation of the so-called “Anastasia Law,” which stipulates that drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or without a driver’s license, who cause accidents resulting in fatalities, will be sentenced to imprisonment without the possibility of suspended sentences by the court.
