During his working visit to the Republic of Latvia, State Secretary Vladimir Cuc held political consultations with the Deputy State Secretary, Political Director at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, Andžejs Viļumsons.
The consultations focused on Moldovan-Latvian bilateral relations, including trade-economic and sectoral cooperation. Both parties highly appreciated the intensive contacts at all levels, including the exchange of experience in public policy, highlighting opportunities for cooperation in areas of common interest. State Secretary Vladimir Cuc thanked the Latvian government for its decision to contribute to Moldova’s energy resilience. The interlocutors discussed the possibility of holding the next meeting of the Joint Economic Cooperation Committee in 2024. The Moldovan diplomat emphasized the importance of launching the direct Riga-Chișinău route by the Latvian company AirBaltic in the spring of next year.
Regarding the bilateral legal framework, the Moldovan side reiterated interest in signing an Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the Republic of Latvia in the field of social security as soon as possible. Progress was noted in negotiating the agreement on the recognition of driver’s licenses.

Deputy State Secretary Andžejs Viļumsons welcomed the European Commission’s recommendation regarding the opening of accession negotiations for the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, appreciating Chișinău’s efforts in implementing EU recommendations. The Latvian side will support the approval of a positive decision at the European Council level. Vladimir Cuc emphasized that authorities are focused on completing the remaining actions and preparing for the accession negotiations. Opinions were exchanged regarding Moldova-EU cooperation in foreign and security policy.
Discussions in separate meetings with Juris Pēkalis, the foreign policy advisor to the Speaker of the Saeima (Latvian Parliament), as well as with Ivars Liepnieks and Salvis Draviņš, advisors on foreign policy and European affairs to the Prime Minister, focused on an in-depth exchange of views regarding Moldova’s European agenda, the country’s political and security situation, the current geopolitical context, and the promotion of inter-parliamentary and intergovernmental cooperation.
