Empowering Equality: Insights from the 2023 Human Rights Forum in Moldova

In Chișinău today, December 6, the Human Rights and Equality Forum takes place, organized in the context of International Human Rights Day and the “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign.

The event begins at 09:00 and unfolds at the Palace of the Republic, under the auspices of the Ombudsman’s Office and the Council for Equality, in collaboration with partners such as the Council of Europe Office in Chișinău, the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and UNICEF Moldova.

“The Forum’s purpose is to analyze and discuss the study on human rights compliance in the Republic of Moldova, identify existing issues, and promote a common commitment to improvement. According to the agenda, a side event is planned to facilitate a constructive dialogue among stakeholders regarding the interconnection between human rights and environmental protection.

The first Forum session aims to evaluate the perception of human rights in 2023, focusing on aspects related to refugee rights and children’s rights, based on a study by the Ombudsman’s Office with support from the Council of Europe. The second session will present the National Human Rights Program, discussing the context and necessity of developing a human rights policy document, recommendations with the lowest implementation level, and future actions for improving human rights compliance in the Republic of Moldova.

The third session of the Forum will be a platform for discussions with civil society on the situation of human rights and equality. It will provide an opportunity not only to reflect on human rights and equality issues from the perspective of civil society but also to identify solutions and opportunities for strengthening collaboration and partnership between civil society and authorities in the field,” announce the organizers.

The event will culminate with a crucial topic on human rights and environmental protection, which has become a priority for our country, requiring constant cooperation at both national and international levels.

The 2023 Human Rights and Equality Forum bring together representatives from various levels of state authorities, the country’s top leadership, development partners such as embassies and international organizations, along with representatives of civil society. Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to discussions and provide diverse perspectives on the human rights situation in the Republic of Moldova. The working language of the Forum will be Romanian with simultaneous translation into English and Russian.
