The Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has not considered excluding candidates from the electoral race. Angela Caraman explained during a press briefing that representatives of the electoral authority have been monitoring the information released by the police but have not yet received the materials needed to conclude the matter.
Additionally, the CEC chairwoman emphasized that commission members have information from the field regarding violations committed during the signature collection process. According to her, officials within the institution will make a statement after the police provide them with the data on violations committed by electoral competitors.
“Until today (note: October 9, 2024), I have not received such a request. (…) I followed that press conference (note: statements made in October by the head of the National Police, Viorel Cernauteanu, and Chief Anti-Corruption Prosecutor Veronica Dragalin, regarding voter bribery and election fraud). We have certain information from the field and concerns violations committed during the signature collection process and what our colleagues from the General Police Inspectorate have gathered. We have not yet received the materials to comment on them. After we receive them, we will make a statement,” concluded Caraman.
Although the printing of the ballots is in full swing, if one of the 11 candidates is excluded, the officials at the polling stations will place a stamp with the inscription “withdrawn” next to their name.
