If Gazprom does not provide alternative routes for gas transit to the MGRES power plant, Moldova will need to buy electricity from other sources. This situation creates an opportunity for misinformation, which aims to spread chaos, confusion, fear, and division in society.

That’s why information on this topic must be accurate and fact-based, without speculation or false claims. Well-informed citizens who rely on facts can resist attempts to divide us.

Question 1: Why does Moldova need to connect to the European electricity system?

Answer: Connecting to the European electricity market allows Moldova to import and export electricity. This strengthens the country’s energy security by diversifying supply sources and reducing dependence on a single provider. Relying on one source creates vulnerabilities, while diversification builds resilience for Moldova’s energy sector.

Question 2: Where will Moldova get electricity if the Cuciurgan (MGRES) power plant stops operating?

Answer: Moldova can buy part of its electricity from Romania. Currently, most of our electricity comes from MGRES, but the government is actively working to diversify energy sources. Agreements are in place to purchase electricity at preferential prices, and Moldova can also buy energy from the OPCOM market, managed by Transelectrica’s subsidiary.

Question 3: How much gas does Moldova have in storage?

Answer: Moldova has secured 15% of its annual gas needs, as required by law. Energocom has purchased and stored natural gas in Romania and Ukraine. In 2024, Moldova stored 150 million cubic meters of gas. These reserves ensure access to gas while the government works on long-term solutions.

Question 4: Is the Iasi-Ungheni-Chisinsu gas pipeline operational?

Answer: Yes, this pipeline is fully operational and gives Moldova access to European gas supplies. In addition, four more strategic projects to expand the natural gas transport network have been launched. For more details, visit the Ministry of Energy’s website (energie.gov.md). Expanding energy infrastructure will make Moldova more resilient.
