Construction of the new road bridge over the Prut River, linking Golaiesti (Romania) and Zagarancea (Moldova), will officially begin on April 26. Launch ceremonies will be held simultaneously on both banks of the Prut.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Vladimir Bolea, with Romania’s Secretary of State at the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Irinel Ionel Scriosteanu, jointly urged the public to attend this symbolic event.
“This is a heartfelt project named the Bridge of Flowers. It’s about the Ungheni–Ungheni Bridge. On April 26, we will begin construction on both sides of the Prut. In the 1990s, people formed a metaphorical bridge of flowers—a spiritual connection. Today, we begin turning that dream into reality,” said Deputy Prime Minister Bolea at a press conference.
Secretary of State Scriosteanu emphasized the deeper meaning of the project, calling it “not just a bridge, but a cornerstone in building relations between brothers.”

“This is a historic event—after 60 years, we are building a new bridge across the Prut. This moment deserves to be celebrated with the sentiment and meaning it carries,” he said.
Scrioșteanu added that by 2030, authorities aim to build five bridges over the Prut, ensuring that each district in Moldova has at least one connection to Europe. “Towards the Europe of which Moldova is part—where it belongs. As they say in Chisinau, this should become a reality by 2028–2029.”
The bridge will feature four traffic lanes—two in each direction—and pedestrian sidewalks. It will measure 261 meters in length and 13 meters in width in its initial phase, expanding to 24.25 meters in the second stage. The project also includes a modern border crossing point with customs facilities, truck and car parking areas, and a connecting road of approximately one kilometer.
The Bridge of Flowers is a key component of the strategic A8 Union Highway, which will connect Targu Mures – Iasi – Ungheni to Moldova’s border and link with National Road R1 Chisinau – Ungheni. Authorities expect to open the bridge to temporary road traffic in the autumn of 2026, with the full completion of the Union Highway scheduled for 2029–2030.
The project is fully funded by the European Union through the Connecting Europe Facility, with investment exceeding €30 million.
