Marculesti Airport will merge with Chisinau International Airport and become a cargo airport within the next 1–2 years, IPN reports. Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea made these statements during the “Rezoomat” show on RliveTV.
Bolea explained: “Marculesti Airport offers the possibility to reduce ticket prices once the State Airport takes over its management. Parliament will vote on this project. Afterwards, we will convert the airport into a cargo terminal. We are currently losing this potential revenue.”
According to the Deputy Prime Minister, all relevant institutions have already approved the draft law regarding the merger of the two airports.

Bolea stated: “We will proceed with a merger by absorption. Parliament will vote, and the merger will take place. Then, the Public Services Agency will register all Marculesti assets under the Chisinau Airport. After that, we will start rebuilding the runway in Marculesti. This entire process will take 1–2 years.”
He emphasized that Chisinau Airport can no longer expand to handle the cargo segment.
“It has reached its capacity. But with a dedicated cargo airport, we can go far beyond the 5,000 tons of goods transported last year—packages, mail—and turn into a regional cargo hub,” said Bolea.
The Minister also mentioned that, after making the necessary investments in Marculesti, the airport could also handle seasonal charter flights.
“Later, after Chisinau Airport invests in Marculesti, we can move charter flights there during the summer vacation season,” added Vladimir Bolea.
