Statements by journalists and public figures in Moscow, which contain worrying, even threatening messages to Moldova, as well as the increasingly frequent public discussions of the chief negotiator from Tiraspol on the “independence” of the Transnistrian region were some of the subjects discussed today, July 19, by the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Oleg Serebrian, with the Special Representative of the Russian Federation in the negotiation process on the Transnistrian settlement, Vitalii Treapitsin.
Discussions focused on the current state of dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol, the agenda of negotiations, visions on mechanisms for resolving the accumulated problems, as well as priority measures taken by the Moldovan authorities to provide necessary assistance to residents on the left bank of the Dniester.
Serebrian said that at the moment the 5 + 2 format is frozen, largely due to the war in Ukraine, and since the end of 2019 he has had no meeting in this format, although the war in the neighboring country began on 24 February. This “signals the existence of deeper structural problems that need to be addressed.”
“It was emphasized that the chief negotiator from Tiraspol, in his public statements, speaks more and more often about the” independence “of the Transnistrian region, obviously violating the statements of the participants in the 5 + 2 format. At the same time, statements of journalists and public figures from Moscow contain worrying, even threatening messages “, it is shown in a press release of the Reintegration Policy Office.
Oleg Serebrian specified that the Government of the Republic of Moldova wants to help the inhabitants of the left bank who are now in a difficult situation, ensuring a constant interaction through the existing communication channels between Chisinau and Tiraspol.
The exclusion of potential challenges that would jeopardize the proper functioning of Romanian-language schools in the eastern districts of the country and farmers’ access to agricultural land in Dubasari district was also discussed. The Special Representative agreed with the challenges of access to agricultural land, Romanian-language schools and, in general, obstacles to free movement on the Dniester.
The Deputy Prime Minister also informed the Russian official about the inhumane conditions in which several citizens of the Republic of Moldova are detained in the prisons of eastern districts, particularly mentioning the case of Adrian Glijin. It was reiterated that there is an urgent need to address in the negotiations, considering the obvious deterioration of respect for human rights in the Transnistrian region.
