Igor Grosu: “A pro-Russian government would run the risk of sending young Moldovans to Putin’s wars”

Igor Grosu, president of the PAS, stated at a press conference that the takeover of the government by pro-Russian forces, in the context of the parliamentary elections on September 28, would mean halting the country’s European trajectory.

“Such a scenario would mean losing visa-free travel, stopping our European path, canceling the referendum vote, and even the risk of Moldovan youth being sent to Putin’s wars,” Grosu said.

He noted that a return to power of pro-Russian parties would have serious consequences, including:

  • Limiting the voting rights of the diaspora, as indicated by a draft law already registered by the current opposition in Parliament.
  • Annulment of the referendum results on European integration, won despite “a fierce struggle” with massive financial resources from opponents.
  • The danger of Moldova being drawn into Russia’s war against Ukraine, risking Moldovan youth becoming “cannon fodder” in foreign conflicts.
  • Blocking reforms in the justice system and protecting those involved in corruption.
  • International isolation and loss of European support, including benefits related to free movement and local funding.

Grosu emphasized that the September 28 elections are decisive and conducted in a single round. He made a special appeal to the diaspora:

“You are part of our body, part of our family. The diaspora has always contributed enormously to the country. Therefore, on September 28, we must mobilize perfectly and vote for peace, development, and the European future of the Republic of Moldova,” Grosu concluded.
