“Mother and Child” Institute – provided by UNFPA with equipment worth $550,000

The official ceremony of handing over the high-performance equipment in the field of obstetrics and gynecology to the Department of Obstetrics no. 1 of the Perinatal Center of the Mother and Child Institute takes place today, November 3. This equipment will save the lives and health of future generations. Considering that more than 2500 births are registered here annually, such donations become extremely relevant and important.

The official ceremony was attended by Natalia GavriliÈ›a, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova, Ala Nemerenco, Minister of Health of the Republic of Moldova, Adrian Belîi, Deputy in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, President of the Parliamentary Committee “Social Protection, Health and Family”, E.S. Kent D. Logsdon, The US Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Dr. Nigina Abaszada, Resident Representative of UNFPA Moldova, Sergiu Gladun, Director of the “Mother and Child” Institute.

The total value of the equipment procured for the Mother and Child Institute is 550 thousand US dollars. The project of endowment and procurement of equipment is initiated and implemented by UNFPA Moldova – the UN Population Fund, with the financial support of the Government of the United States of America.

The “Mother and Child” Institute is one of the 9 beneficiary medical institutions of the endowment project implemented by UNFPA Moldova. Thus, during the months of October-November, the birthing wards, the intensive therapy of the newborn, and the gynecology wards throughout the country are fully equipped with high-performance equipment. The total value of the equipment delivered by UNFPA to medical institutions is 3.6 million US dollars. The acquisition of the equipment was carried out in the context of the humanitarian crisis generated by the war in Ukraine, with the financial support of the government of the United States of America.

This improvement in the capacities of medical institutions will make about 15 thousand births take place annually in safer conditions, and newborns in serious situations will be saved thanks to modern reanimation and intensive care devices.
