Chisinau Circus: A Marvelous Entertainment Spectacle

The Chisinau State Circus, located in the heart of Moldova’s capital city, has been delighting audiences for over four decades with its spectacular shows and skilled performers. With its animal acts, aerial acrobatics, and modernist architecture, the circus is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

Established in 1981, the Chisinau State Circus was home to a range of animals, including lions, tigers, elephants, and horses. The animal trainers work closely with the animals to create stunning displays of agility and strength, showcasing the perfect harmony between performers and animals.

Aside from animal acts, the circus boasts breathtaking aerial acrobatics, with performers soaring high above the audience, showcasing daring feats of strength and grace. The performers use ropes, trapezes, and other equipment to create a stunning display of athleticism, leaving the audience in awe

Built in a modernist style, the circus has a distinctive circular shape and a large dome-shaped roof. The interior of the circus can hold up to 2,500 spectators, with a large ring in the center for the performers.

The circus has undergone many changes over the years, from being state-owned and managed during the Soviet era to being privatized after the collapse of the Soviet Union. However, the circus continues to entertain audiences with its skilled performers and exciting acts.

After being forgotten for a decade, the Chisinau State Circus is slowly being restored to its past glory, bringing joy and entertainment to a new generation of Moldovans. The construction company, selected following the tender launched by UNDP, has started the repair work on the roof. Rehabilitation work in this first phase could be completed by the end of 2023. The European Union, through the “Confidence Building Measures” Programme, implemented by UNDP, allocated over 1,800,000 euros, which covered the costs for detailed technical expertise, design, and restoration/conservation works included in the first stage.

With its rich cultural heritage and stunning performances, the Chisinau State Circus is a gem of Moldova’s capital city. Due to its special architectural value in May 2022, it was included in the Register of State-Protected Monuments.
