Romania’s Prime Minister believes that the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine should begin EU accession negotiations by the end of the year, as stated in an interview with the German publication Der Standard.
The Romanian official emphasized that, constitutionally, the Republic of Moldova is neutral when asked about the country’s NATO membership. At the same time, he believes that the administration in ChiÈ™inău has achieved energy independence from the Russian Federation.
“As for NATO, Moldova is constitutionally a neutral state. But Ukraine and Moldova should start accession negotiations with the EU this year. At the same time, a signal should also be set for North Macedonia, Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. Otherwise, frustration will increase in these states,” stated Ciolacu.
The Republic of Moldova hopes to open EU accession negotiations this year. According to the head of the EU delegation, Janis Mazeiks, the meeting at which the Europeans will make a decision regarding the country will take place in December.
